The Print

Westbeth is named after the famed cooperative housing project developed in the 1960s as affordable homes for artists in the far West Village of Lower Manhattan. The print is a tongue and cheek take on the authentic “artist’s mark.”

Brush stroke gestures are repeated at a suboptimal resolution so the viewer can clearly see they were manufactured rather than handmade. The print looks a little messy and broken apart—like out of a 80s post-punk zine. We updated the print for 2024 using a much deeper and richer black than the original print.

The Bib, a riff on the traditional Holoku

When the missionaries brought the nightgown like Mother Hubbard style to Polynesia they never imagined the riot of color and print that Hawai’i would cover it in. We think its dowdy shape was a sharp rebuke to female objectification.

We spent years mulling over this tradtional shape, trying to figure out how to make it fun and wearable. We decided to exaggerate its essential elements. We pulled out the gathers and the darts to simplify it. We shortened it. And we added a small button detail in the back as a nod to its genteel beginnings.
