Margrethe Dress

$482.00

This dress is special order. Limited number available.

The Margrethe dress marries an artist’s smock with a shirtdress. Patch pockets at the perfect angle for your hands. Mother of pearl buttons, nehru collar, and button cuffs come together to create something sophisticated and comfortable.

This is a free-fit garment. The sleeves are dolman shaped and the cuff comes to bracelet length. We are offering it in 2 sizes. Size 1 fits up to US 8 and Size 2 fits up to US 16. Please reach out with fit questions.

The Italian linen used for most of these prints is absolutely phenomenal with an excellent soft hand and heft that gives it truly a feeling of old fashioned quality. A truly seasonless garment.

Due to the scale of the print, print placement varies on finished garments. Due to the natural texture of the finish there may be slubs and tiny imperfections with the print.

The Print

Westbeth is named after the famed cooperative housing project developed in the 1960s as affordable homes for artists in the far West Village of Lower Manhattan. The print is a tongue and cheek take on the authentic “artist’s mark.”

Brush stroke gestures are repeated at a suboptimal resolution so the viewer can clearly see they were manufactured rather than handmade. The print looks a little messy and broken apart—like out of a 80s post-punk zine. We updated the print for 2024 using a much deeper and richer black than the original print.

The form

The Margrethe dress; artist smock meets shirt dress. With classic menswear details and an easy one piece body, this dress has become a favorite for us. The printed Italian linen is substantial yet completely breathable so it can be worn year round. Roll up the sleeves for the summer, pair with a sweater and tights in the winter.

The slanted patch pockets hold a phone or a hand with a deeply rewarding ease. Named for American photographer Margrethe Mather.

We cut and sew each one in our barn studio in Upstate NY.
