About Us

hello/aloha

Language of the Birds is a print driven brand founded in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. We were born in a back cottage in Manoa in 2014. Our current studio is a barn in Upstate New York. See our Press Book

Sustainability and aloha are the heart of our manufacturing approach. We design all our prints and provide radical transparency in our production. We do things in a slow, stubborn, old fashioned way so you can enjoy what we make for years to come. We make almost all of our apparel in our Upstate studio or work with small US factories.

Language of the Birds centers on our bespoke prints. Our work has been recognized by Pantone and we are in collection at the RISD Museum. We work with excellent fabric printers in Italy, India and the US to achieve this level of work.

Founder

Tsia Carson is a designer, author, and teacher. For over two decades she was a partner at the interactive and graphic design firm Flat where she worked with a wide variety of clients such as The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands, The Museum of Modern Art, Deutsche Bank, Aperture Foundation, Brennan Center for Justice, and Loeffler Randall. She was a Pantone Spotlight Artist for 2024’s Color of the Year.

She has taught/critiqued at Yale School of Art, RISD, Hunter College, University of the Arts, and The New School/Parsons. She authored two books and managed a robust online community during the alt craft heyday of the early oughts. She wrote a short, heartfelt essay about Willi Smith for the Cooper Hewitt's Willi Smith: Street Couture Exhibition.

A born and bred New Yorker, inexplicably she considers Hawaiʻi home.
